Alphabet Plans to Expand Google Cloud Platform

Alphabet announced Thursday that they will be expanding the Google Cloud perform, opening two new regions to the internet based structure. The two new regions will be in Oregon and East Asia, likely in Japan, and will be ready to operate at full capacity by the end of 2016. The two new regions will offer numerous zones to them, and will also have a range of computing operations that are available to customers, very much like what they are already offering in other regions with the Google Cloud is offered.

Currently, Google has 10 regions that they plan to build over the next two years, with these first two being the kickoff of their expansion. This is seen as an “aggressive” expansion by the company as they look to perform a massive scale of their operations in these regions.

Google explains that the expansion will greatly increase the response time that the company is able offer customers at a very competitive price to anything that is currently offered. They also point out that this will lead to a much lower latency.

This new plan by Google comes on the heels of the company winning a big contract from the Amazon Web Services has 12 regions across the globe that are currently operational, and so Google is looking to take a large bite out of the share of those markets. The company sees this as a real opportunity to become the global leader and remove Amazon from atop their perch.

Late in 2015, Google voted one of its board members, Diane Greene, to oversee and lead the initiative to improve the company’s cloud presence. Greene has decided that simply being one of the leaders is not good enough but is, instead, going for the top spot. At a recent conference related to internal sales, Greene made it clear that the focus of the company will be on enterprise customers, telling their sales force that they needed to focus their attention on selling much harder so that they could overcome the dominance that Amazon Web Services currently has in this market.

The first step to this is the improve the company’s standing in the cloud industry with this global initiative. If they reach current projects to have 10 additional regions within the next two years they will surpass Amazon and could quickly become the dominant force in this market.
